GOHi supports review of National Causality Assessment Process in Ethiopia

The Ohio State University Global One Health initiative (GOHi) supported the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) in undertaking a performance review of the National Causality Assessment process. Thirty participants, including members of the National Pharmacovigilance advisory committee, experts from the National Immunization Program and the pharmacovigilance team from the EFDA, attended the assessment.

GOHi facilitates basic data analysis training in Ethiopia

The Ohio State University Global One Health initiative (GOHi), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), conducted a four-day training on basic data analysis for 19 participants.

The primary purpose of this training was to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) data collection, storage, analysis, interpretation and reporting. The training also aimed to fill data analysis tools/software skills gaps.

National One Health advocacy workshop

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi), in collaboration with the Ethiopian National One Health Steering Committee and the World Health Organization Ethiopia office, conducted a consultative workshop on One Health.

This workshop brought together more than 40 participants from government stakeholders and development partners to discuss success stories, identify gaps and challenges in One Health implementation and sustain successful collaborations in Ethiopia.

GOHi staff spotlight: Amy Mihalakas

As the Assistant Director of Strategic Operations at Global One Health initiative (GOHi) for The Ohio State University, Amy Mihalakas works with Ohio State faculty and staff to advance the GOHi strategy by supporting grant implementation, operations and stakeholder engagement and securing new funding. Mihalakas works to grow GOHi's collaboration and coordination across the university and with GOHi's Eastern Africa office in Ethiopia.

GOHi leaders visit Washington, D.C.

Global One Health initiative (GOHi) leaders Wondwossen Gebreyes, executive director, Amy Mihalakas, assistant director, and Shu-Hua Wang, director of applied research and implementation, met with key federal sponsors and stakeholders in Washington, D.C. in February.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center organized a roundtable discussion engaging diverse NIH institutes to discuss GOHi and Ohio State’s efforts in research and training capacity building.

Academic directors for Global Gateways appointed

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) has appointed three Ohio State faculty members to serve as academic directors for the Global Gateways, Ohio State’s liaison offices in China, India and Brazil. In addition to their faculty appointments, they will serve as part-time senior advisors for the Global Gateways and connect with Ohio State’s 15 colleges and regional campuses to identify new partnership opportunities abroad.

GOHi staff spotlight: Samuel Muluye Welelaw

Samuel Muluye Welelaw is a senior monitoring and evaluation expert at the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) Ethiopia office. Samuel has more than 15 years of experience in designing and developing monitoring and evaluation systems for project planning, performance monitoring and evaluations, managing various research and surveys, designing information management systems, project management by coordinating key stakeholders and providing research and evaluation analysis for donors. 

OHEART annual meeting held in Gondar, Ethiopia

Global One Health initiative (GOHi) conducted its One Health East Africa Research and Training (OHEART) Program annual meeting in Gondar, Ethiopia February 2-3. GOHi’s OHEART Program aims to strengthen and sustain the international research training program shared between The Ohio State University and institutes of higher learning in eastern Africa.  

Data analysis of real time PCR training helps improve laboratory capacity

Senior laboratory experts, Zelalem Mekuria, Joan Miquel Balada-Llasat and Tadesse Eguale from the Global One Health initiative provided laboratory real time PCR training for six microbiologists from Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Addis Ababa, in an effort to improve laboratory capacity. The training was conducted as part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Global Action in Healthcare Network Antimicrobial Resistance project.  

Future collaborations with AASTU may be on the horizon

Global One Health initiative (GOHi) leadership met with representatives from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) to initiate potential collaborations that build research capacity. Representatives from GOHi and AASTU presented overviews of their current activities and identified opportunities for mutually beneficial areas of focus.
