College Responsibilities for Global Education

The Office of International Affairs collaborates with Ohio State’s 15 colleges and four regional campuses to effectively manage the growth of high quality and affordable international experiences for students. Recent changes to education abroad now align several key responsibilities within the colleges in order to enhance education abroad opportunities for students and provide an unparalleled partnership with those who manage and coordinate education abroad programs for the benefit of Ohio State students.

Strategies

College Liaison – A liaison is appointed to provide assistance to faculty and departments with interest in developing new opportunities, lead the annual program reauthorization process and review budgets for individual faculty-led programs in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs. In addition, the liaison manages the enrollment in the college's education abroad placeholder course for students who are participating on college-approved third party provider and exchange programming, and monitors enrollment numbers in student exchange programs. The liaison is also responsible for promoting the college's education abroad opportunities to college stakeholders and audiences.

Access and Affordability – Plans are developed and resources determined for increasing participation in education abroad and ensuring affordability. Colleges are encouraged to identify plans to promote global education as well as ways in which the cost of programs can be lowered either through scholarships or strategic investments. These plans are to be communicated widely throughout each respective college.

Program Fees – In collaboration with the Office of International Affairs, colleges are actively involved in setting program fees for faculty-led and Ohio State sponsored programs. The Office of International Affairs researches expenses for airlines, vendors, host institutions and other providers and distributes estimated costs to the colleges for review with their fiscal officers before program fees are finalized. A calendar of activities and deadlines for setting fees keeps programs on track.

Authorization of New and/or Continuing Education Abroad Programs – All new or continuing education abroad programs must be approved at the college level before the sponsoring academic unit can begin working with the Office of International Affairs to coordinate the program. The Guidelines for Developing an Global Education Programs section will provide faculty with detailed information about the proposal and approval process.

These recently adopted strategies are fully supported by the university and have been instituted to further develop and expand education abroad at Ohio State. For additional information, please contact Jeannie Simmons, director of global education.
