The annual One Health Summer Institute involves faculty from Ohio State and regional partners delivering modular training, interactive workshops, didactic training and applied learning opportunities to build One Health capacity among Ohio State students and eastern Africa professionals.
The Summer Institute is supported through donor funds, federal grant funding, Ethiopian partners funding and in-kind donations and involves faculty and staff from across the university, including faculty from 30 different departments with very diverse expertise.
OHSI is a keystone project to the Global One Health initiative’s capacity building among Ohio State undergraduates, graduate, professional students, faculty and post-doctoral fellows. It provides the Ohio State community with opportunities for hands-on training in research, animal care, One Health techniques and laboratory methods. In addition, the Summer Institute has expanded Ohio State’s presence in the region and created opportunities for pursuing other sponsored programs with regional partners.
The Summer Institute will offer diverse One Health opportunities, including training on One Health communications strategies, international trade and risk analysis, molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases and study design and sample size estimation.

Social Anthropology: Ethnographic Research
July 23
Instructor: Jeffrey Cohen
This session on ethnographic research will focus on the methodology of field study. It will discuss the principles of ethics for fieldwork, including details of institutional review, and will emphasize the code of conduct for ethnographic interviews. This course will also address technical approaches during ethnographic research, indirect observation methods and focused group discussion.
Equine Medicine Training Program
August 12-15
Course Lead: Jorge Lohse
Instructors: Abrha Bsrat, Sebastian Galecio, Elza Hollenbach, Jessica Johnson, Jorge Lohse, Amy McLean, Fernando Vergara, Julia Wilson
Target Audience: Veterinary students, professionals and veterinary paraprofessionals (community health workers) interested in equine medicine and surgery
This course builds on the core equine ambulatory skills to help equine practitioners tackle general health issues encountered in the field. Instructors will discuss conventional first-opinion techniques and introduce a One Health approach to fieldwork, providing a better understanding of the etiology, transmission and control of infectious diseases important to veterinary medicine and public health. Students will also learn about the theoretical and practical aspects of equine field medicine and surgery in the context of working equines used in the developing sector. This course addresses common clinical scenarios equine ambulatory practitioners encounter in the field. Trainees taking this course are expected to have a veterinary background and some exposure to equine caseload.
