Area Studies Centers award $1.15 million in FLAS fellowships

The East Asian Studies Center, Center for Latin American Studies and Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies have awarded $1.150 million in student support this year in the form of 50 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship grants to Ohio State students spanning 16 graduate programs and 22 undergraduate majors. Funding for FLAS Fellowships comes from the U.S.

Smith and Yusko honored with Distinguished Staff Awards

Janet Smith, assistant director of outreach for the East Asian Studies Center and Amanda Yusko, program manager for the international student team in the Office of International Affairs, are recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Staff Award, the highest honor bestowed upon staff at Ohio State.

OIA international research and scholarship grants awarded for 2024-2025 academic year

The Office of international Affairs (OIA) awarded close to $100,000 in grants to seven faculty, 21 graduate students, and two undergraduate students to conduct international research and scholarship projects abroad and in the United States. Awards ranged between $1,000 and $4,000, and will be used during the 2024-25 academic year.

From Brazil to Uganda, Estonia to South Korea and everywhere in between, faculty and students will travel to 18 different countries to advance their research and expand their global engagement.

Provost Zadnik honors Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays recipients

On March 28, 2024, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Karla Zadnik recognized students and faculty from The Ohio State University who are recent Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays recipients and Fulbright student semifinalists, as well as visiting Fulbright students and scholars from around the globe, during a reception at the Thompson Library.

Alumni Spotlight: Lode Saliba Raffoul

Lode Saliba Raffoul ’84 has put everything she learned during her time at The Ohio State University to good use in her native country of Brazil. Saliba Raffoul’s Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics came in handy three years ago when she began working as a beekeeper on an apiary she and her siblings inherited from their parents in Borebi, São Paulo.

Brazilian students participate in Taste of OSU and Celebrations of Nations

Taste of OSU, an Ohio State Signature Event, took place on February 16 at the Ohio Union where attendees experienced cultures from around the world through a night of food, music and performances. This year, more than 40 different international clubs participated, including the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA).

Ohio State faculty visit the Brazilian Amazon

Two Ohio State researchers attended the world’s largest gathering of experts on the study of ants at XXVI Simpósio de Mirmecologia: An International Ant Meeting, which was held in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil last October.

Rachelle Adams, associate professor, and Livia Pires do Prado, postdoctoral researcher,  with Ohio State’s Museum of Biological Biodiversity, participated in the scientific conference and an expedition in the Amazon.
