Due to the preliminary injunction by a federal court on September 14, 2026, which paused a new federal immigration rule change affecting international students and visiting scholars in the United States, immigration information on this website is subject to change. Ohio State is monitoring these developments and will update this website as additional information becomes available.

There are two types of passports for international travel, depending on the destination. Each can be obtained at a passport acceptance facility, and each use the same initial form. Each type of passport will also have different application costs and fees.

Passport Book

Passport books allow you to travel internationally by air, sea or land.

Passport Card

Passport cards allow you to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, some Caribbean destinations and Bermuda by land or sea. Passport cards are not valid for international travel by air. They can be used to cross land borders faster from Mexico and Canada at Ready Lanes.

How to pay your application and acceptance fees

When you apply in person at a passport acceptance facility, you will need to pay two fees: one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility where you submit your application.

To pay the passport application fee:

  • Submit a check (personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's) or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State" with your application.
    • Write the applicant’s name and date of birth in the memo section.

If you want your application processed or mailed quicker, you can add these optional fees:

  • Processing: For expedited service, add $60 to your application fee.
  • Sending your application to us: Pay the acceptance facility for faster USPS Priority Mail Express shipping. The cost for this service varies based on location.
  • Returning your new passport: If you want your new passport in one to three days after we mail it, add $23.36 to your application fee.

To pay the $35 facility acceptance fee, you can either:

  • Submit a check (personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's) or money order payable to "The Ohio State University" with your application.
    • Write the applicant’s name and date of birth in the memo section.
  • The Office of International Affairs passport acceptance facility accepts most major debit and credit cards.
