Three Ohio State Area Studies Centers have been awarded more than $5.5 million in U.S. Department of Education grants for the next four years. These awards support language and area studies learning and provide grant opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students.

Lerner honored for distinguished service
Mitch Lerner, director of the East Asian Studies Center and professor of history, has been recognized with the 2022 Peter L. Hahn award for distinguished service by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR). The award is annually presented to a senior historian who has provided significant contributions to the growth and development of SHARF over the course of their career.
China Gateway supports graduate recruitment efforts
Ohio State’s Graduate and Professional Admissions and the China Gateway hosted a virtual information session on May 13 for potential students at a graduate school fair organized by the Rochester Institute of Technology-Weihai and Beijing Jiaotong University.
The session was well attended with 39 students and family members. An overview of Ohio State’s graduate and professional programs was presented as well as tips on how to navigate the graduate admissions website, and information about tuition, scholarships, research, and career opportunities.
High school counselor advisory board formed in China
Identifying ways in which Ohio State can best facilitate a student’s transition from high school to college and through graduation is the goal of the newly formed High School Counselor Advisory Board in China. In partnership with the Office of Student Academic Success, the China Gateway appointed members to the inaugural advisory board, which held its first meeting on May 24. The board consists of nine experienced high school counselors from cities across China including, Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo, Ji’nan and Wuhan.
Hong Kong alumni raise funds for children with cancer
Finding ways to pay forward is a long-time tradition of every Buckeye and the spirit of giving runs deep within The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Hong Kong, which recently raised HK$140,588 (close to $18,000 USD) to help children with cancer and their families in need.
Chang forges new path as first international USG president
When Jacob Chang, a fourth-year student from Nanjing, China, first arrived at Ohio State, he never could have imagined how the next few years would unfold. Chang started as a computer science and engineering student.
International Affairs recognized with advising award
The Office of International Affairs has been awarded the Wayne Carlson Friend of ACADAOS Award for the 2021-22 academic year. ACADAOS is Ohio State’s internal Academic Advising Association, a professional organization for academic advisors. The award was presented on April 27 at the annual ACADAOS Recognition Ceremony, which honors outstanding advisors and advising administrators.

China Gateway creates virtual career networking opportunities
In collaboration with the American Universities’ China Association (AUCA), the China Gateway introduced a series of virtual career networking opportunities which helped Buckeyes interact with employers in China in March and April.
Undergraduate virtual recruitments events
The China Gateway partnered with the Offices of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Life, to host webinars to share information about the university, answer questions and encourage admitted students to attend Ohio State. The two webinars were in Mandarin Chinese and almost 100 students and families attended the two events.
