Fulbright Scholar Lewandowski joins Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures

Wojciech Lewandowski, a visiting Fulbright Slavic Award recipient from Poland’s University of Warsaw, has joined the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures for spring semester 2023.

Gebreyes meets with partners in Ethiopia

Wondwossen Gebreyes, Global One Health initiative (GOHi) executive director, visited Ethiopia in December to visit key partners, including the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Armauer Hansen Research Institute, Ministry of Education and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Ethiopia Office.

Collaborative research implementation for current projects, capacity building in various One Health areas and plans for future partnerships were discussed.

Kobo to lead Center for African Studies

Ousman Murzik Kobo, associate professor in the Department of History, has been appointed director of the Center for African Studies.

CLAS and School of Music host residency in Brazil

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the Ohio State School of Music developed a partnership for a series of academic exchange events in 2022 and 2024. In September, Ohio State welcomed three artists from Brazil who hosted master classes and a recital and performed in the Latin American Music Celebration Concert. They also met with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and visited local schools.

Area Studies Centers awarded Title VI grants

Three Ohio State Area Studies Centers have been awarded more than $5.5 million in U.S. Department of Education grants for the next four years. These awards support language and area studies learning and provide grant opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students.

Herrmann panelist at “Serbian-American Partnership Throughout the Centuries” conference in Belgrade

Rick Herrmann, emeritus faculty in political science and the former director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, served as a panelist at the international conference “Serbian-American Partnership Throughout the Centuries” in July. Hosted by the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Belgrade, the two-day conference featured American Ambassador Christopher Hill, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin Tammy Baldwin and prominent faculty and scholars from across Serbia, Croatia and the United States.

Brintlinger lectures on kvas and on Sergei Loznitsa during visit to Belgrade

Angela Brintlinger, director of the Serbian Educational Alliance (SEA) project as well as the Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES), travelled to Serbia for a week in late May to meet with the University of Belgrade Political Science faculty on the SEA team as well as officials at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.
