A master's student from Nigeria in the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, Samuel Oluwayemi shares his “Your America in 250 Words” essay.
When I stood along the streets of Orrville, Ohio, watching families wave American flags during a community parade, I realized I was experiencing something I had only seen in movies. As an international student from Nigeria pursuing a master's degree in Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University Wooster Campus, I was not just watching a celebration, I was being welcomed into it.
The parade reminded me that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Watching neighbors gather, children laugh, and families celebrate together gave me a deeper appreciation for the sense of community that exists here. I smiled as candy flew through the air from the passing floats. Soon I was reaching for it alongside children and families, sharing in a tradition that was completely new to me.
I came to the United States expecting to grow academically through research and graduate school. Instead, I have also been learning through everyday experiences. From trying new foods to adapting to different communication styles, every interaction has taught me something about American culture. More importantly, the kindness of the people I have met has shown me that genuine hospitality can bridge cultural differences.
America has become a place where I have grown not only as a researcher, but also as a person. That is the America I will always remember, and I am grateful that my journey has become part of its story as it marks 250 years.
