Nikolas King had a unique experience while in Peru studying Quechua as a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship award recipient. For his two-month long fellowship, King resided in his private tutor’s home, located in the city of Lima. While there, he participated in immersive language lessons. His tutor is a native Quechua speaker who works in the field of anthropology.

Buckeyes venture out of their comfort zones and gain confidence over winter break
From discussing climate change at COP29 in Azerbaijan to learning veterinary techniques for examining elephants in Thailand, more than 190 Buckeyes studied abroad in seven countries on eight programs during winter break 2024. Students learned lessons, ventured out of their comfort zones, gained confidence, and developed new cultural understanding.

Immersed in language and culture: Paul Renner's FLAS journey
Paul Renner spent his summer fully immersing himself in the Portuguese language during his three-month stay in São Paulo, Brazil. Renner, a third-year majoring in biology and public affairs, is a recipient of a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship, which supported his studies at Tulane University’s “Summer in Brazil,” as well as an intensive foreign language program through CET Academic Programs.
Introducing children to East Asian culture through books
When the East Asian Studies Center at The Ohio State University received a U.S. Department of Education grant to support language and area studies part of the more than $2 million award established a regional campus partnership program that included the campus libraries. Over the first two years of the four-year grant the Lima Campus Library has been steadily building its East Asian children’s book section to bolster the resources available to elementary and secondary teachers in the area.

Chinese alumni celebrate a lifetime of friendship
Buckeyes are Buckeyes for life! For four Chinese alumni, being a Buckeye has meant maintaining lifelong bonds across continents. Qiuyuan Pan, Yuanfang Zheng, Shanxiao Xie and Lian Wei were part of the first cohorts from mainland China to study at Ohio State in 1979 and 1980. The friends are now in their 70s and 80s and have had successful careers in engineering, robotics, soil mechanics and publishing, all while staying in touch throughout their lives.
