Brazilian PhD student enriches child development research

Ana Carolina Brito, a PhD student from Brazil, spent four months at The Ohio State University continuing her research as a visiting international scholar in 2024. Her research involves investigating biocultural aspects of the development, growth and routines of children aged 0 to two in Belém, Pará. Brito explores the challenges of growing up amid adversity and examines how social, political, economic and cultural contexts impact child-care routines.

A deep dive into Quechua: Nikolas King's immersive FLAS Fellowship experience

Nikolas King had a unique experience while in Peru studying Quechua as a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship award recipient. For his two-month long fellowship, King resided in his private tutor’s home, located in the city of Lima. While there, he participated in immersive language lessons. His tutor is a native Quechua speaker who works in the field of anthropology.

Immersed in language and culture: Paul Renner's FLAS journey

Paul Renner spent his summer fully immersing himself in the Portuguese language during his three-month stay in São Paulo, Brazil. Renner, a third-year majoring in biology and public affairs, is a recipient of a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship, which supported his studies at Tulane University’s “Summer in Brazil,” as well as an intensive foreign language program through CET Academic Programs.
