Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Buckeyes Abroad: Brooke Miller

I am currently studying civil engineering, and this experience inspired me to take the knowledge I gain from my degree to help others and the environment. It was so rewarding to do activities like planting trees, removing invasive plants, picking up trash and learning about renewable energy. I would love to use my career to further the efforts of sustainability and lessen human impacts on the environment which this program was all about,” reflected civil engineering major Brooke Miller on the Australia: Human Impacts on the Natural Environment program.

Led by the School of Environment and Natural Resources, students explore the relationship between human and natural systems through the lens of environmental sustainability in Queensland, Australia, which is home to lush tropical rainforests, dry woodlands, arid deserts and the spectacular marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef.

I have never left the country before, but I knew I always wanted to travel abroad. With financial support through Ohio State's STEP program and advice from faculty and other students, I was able to make that dream come true. I think studying abroad provides a very important aspect of learning about other cultures while gaining insight into your own country and lifestyle.”

Students spend much time traveling the national parks, forests, wildlife reserves, coastlines and islands of North Queensland under the guidance of knowledgeable field professionals.

“My experience in Australia had many unforgettable moments but what made it so memorable was all of the outdoor experiences we had. From swimming in creeks, snorkeling in the great barrier reef and staying at an off-the-grid wallaby restoration, it was so special to be able to reconnect with nature while getting to know other Ohio State students,” said Miller.

“I have learned so much about myself through this experience. Mainly how important the environment and sustainability are to me, but also how truly happy I am being in nature. We were off-the-grid a lot of the time and it was refreshing to just play cards, go on hikes and spend time together enjoying the beautiful landscapes of Australia.”
