A PhD student from India in the College of Engineering, Varun Pant shares his "Your America in 250 Words” essay.
"On the tarmac outside the National Museum of the United States Air Force sits an F-15 Eagle. When it flies faster than the speed of sound, pressure forces generate lift, turbulence and shockwaves create drag, and their interaction fills the sky with thunder. My research at Ohio State involves studying similar aerodynamic phenomena with mathematical equations and understanding them with colorful plots on my computer screen. But here in Dayton, those abstractions take a physical form. For an international student pursuing aerospace engineering, it felt more than a museum visit. It was an academic pilgrimage.
And it's not just aviation history that's larger than life. Coming from India to the U.S., everything feels bigger: the roads, the cars, the skies. To me, the physical vastness mirrors something deeper: the scale of opportunity and the room to dream bigger.
I also found Americans to be incredibly friendly. Strangers smile at you on sidewalks, hold doors, and ask how your day is going. That familiar warmth makes the distance from home feel a little shorter. And along the way, my friends and peers here turned out to come from all over the world. The fact that nobody finds that unusual says more about diversity in America than anything else.
I landed up in America pursuing my fascination with the physics of fluid flows, the same physics that lets an F-15 defy gravity at twice the speed of sound. Ohio gave the world flight, and is giving me the opportunity to pursue my dreams."
The Office of International Affairs invites Ohio State’s international students to participate in the “Your America in 250 Words” essay and photo contest, a unique opportunity to share personal perspectives and experiences while studying and traveling in the United States.
