Three visiting scholars participated in the Global One Health Summer Institute’s inaugural Experiential Resource Learning and Bioinformatics training program held June 5 to June 30. This closed session was exclusively designed to strengthen the research capacities of Eastern African partner institutions.

The Ohio State University has been named one of the world’s top universities, according to the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings released today. Ohio State is ranked 151st in the world and 35th in the United States.
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) established an integrated pathogen Genomic Core Laboratory that performs genetic sequencing activities across programs and response actions. These activities include detecting COVID-19 variants and identifying and characterizing emerging threats, such as antimicrobial resistance.
The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) assessed these capacities to ensure the lab was up to date, including the availability of a trained workforce to conduct routing molecular sequencing activities.
Samuel Muluye Welelaw is a senior monitoring and evaluation expert at the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) Ethiopia office. Samuel has more than 15 years of experience in designing and developing monitoring and evaluation systems for project planning, performance monitoring and evaluations, managing various research and surveys, designing information management systems, project management by coordinating key stakeholders and providing research and evaluation analysis for donors.
Global One Health initiative (GOHi) leadership met with representatives from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) to initiate potential collaborations that build research capacity. Representatives from GOHi and AASTU presented overviews of their current activities and identified opportunities for mutually beneficial areas of focus.

Mitch Lerner, director of the East Asian Studies Center and professor of history, has been recognized with the 2022 Peter L. Hahn award for distinguished service by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR). The award is annually presented to a senior historian who has provided significant contributions to the growth and development of SHARF over the course of their career.
