In the artist's own words: “Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno, Peru. Chullpas are tombs built above ground in tower-like structures. They are the vestiges of the Colla people, who were conquered by the Inca in the 1400s. The subject is a Peruvian woman dressed in traditional clothing with her rare and endangered vicuña alpaca. The vibrant pigments of her garments stand out against the barren background, just as there are spirited people living in
this rustic country.”
