Buckeyes Abroad: Ally Bissman

“From this experience, I learned how to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. I never expected myself to zipline or try new foods, but I found joy in stepping out of my comfort zone. The culture of "pura vida" in Costa Rica encouraged me to slow down and enjoy life rather than live in stress or fear,” said Ally Bissman, a marketing major who participated in the Fisher College of Business Sustainable Business Global Lab in Costa Rica over spring break.

Through company visits to Kimberly-Clark, Starbucks, Bimbo and CDG Environmental Consulting, students get to learn about day-to-day operations of international companies as well as their sustainability efforts.

“This experience will help me in my career by giving me a unique perspective on sustainability practices from world-renowned companies and by strengthening my willingness to adapt, take initiative, and step outside my comfort zone,” said Bissman.

Costa Rica represents one of the most outstanding examples of sustainability systems in the business world today, working to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“It was important for me to go abroad to learn about sustainability practices in another country, understand different cultural norms and practices, and grow closer with my peers.”

Along with the unique business experiences, students examine Costa Rican culture through ziplining, swimming in hot springs, hiking, visiting a volcano, eating pineapple at an organic pineapple farm, which Bissman notes is perhaps her favorite memory of the program.
