Due to the preliminary injunction by a federal court on September 14, 2026, which paused a new federal immigration rule change affecting international students and visiting scholars in the United States, immigration information on this website is subject to change. Ohio State is monitoring these developments and will update this website as additional information becomes available.

Buckeyes Abroad: Chloe Friedman

For Chloe Friedman, studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria, was an opportunity to strengthen her German language skills while experiencing a new culture and becoming more independent.

Friedman, a third-year student double majoring in international studies and German studies, spent a semester abroad through the BGSU in Austria: University of Salzburg program.

Her time in Austria was filled with experiences that she says she will remember for years to come. From her dorm, Friedman enjoyed views of the Alps each day and experienced local traditions, including a spring Maypole festival. She also spent time swimming in alpine lakes and exploring Europe with new and old friends.

“My experience in Austria was memorable thanks to enjoying a fantastic view of the Alps outside my dorm every day, attending a spring Maypole festival, swimming in alpine lakes and spending time with new and old friends,” Friedman said.

Her travels outside Salzburg added even more memorable moments to her semester. She visited the Acropolis in Athens and enjoyed gelato in Florence, experiences she says made her time abroad unforgettable.

“I will cherish these memories forever,” Friedman said.

Studying abroad was especially important to Friedman because she wanted to improve her German language skills while developing resilience. Living in a different country also challenged her to become more self-reliant.

“While abroad, I became more independent and developed my problem-solving skills,” Friedman said.

Her experience has also influenced her plans after graduation. While abroad, Friedman earned a B2 German language certificate, an accomplishment that she says will support her as she considers future opportunities overseas.

The experience gave Friedman more than memories and a language certification. It helped her develop the independence and problem-solving skills she hopes to carry with her as she explores living and working abroad after graduation.
