Buckeyes Abroad: Lilly Barton

“This experience has taught me how independent I am. Being here has required me to rely on myself every day as I navigate a new schedule, new responsibilities and unfamiliar challenges. Most importantly, my usual support system is 5,000 miles away, which has pushed me to become that source of stability for myself,” reflected Lilly Barton, a finance major who is abroad on the ISI Florence Summer Session program.

During six weeks to start the summer, Barton is living and taking classes in Florence, as well as getting the ability to explore the several cities and cultures in the surrounding region.

“My time abroad has prepared me for my career in several ways. As a fashion minor, my painting class has strengthened the creative/artistic skills that are essential in a design-focused field. Beyond academics, this experience has also helped me become far more adaptable. In just two weeks, I’ve made new friends, navigated foreign airports and train stations completely alone, seen seven different cities and even found a favorite café!”

The decision for Barton to go abroad came out of curiosity and self-development, pushing herself to explore outside Columbus and get exposed to new ways of life and ideas.

“It was important for me to go abroad because it is out of my comfort zone. I’m from Columbus, so even when I’m on campus, I’m never too far from home. Study abroad has been an opportunity for me to embrace discomfort in a beautiful new city!”

Barton’s favorite memory of the trip so far actually came from a small mishap, highlighting her adaptability and the unique skills she’s learned from studying abroad.

“The most memorable moment from my time here so far was when my friends and I took a late-night train to Rome, and when we were walking to our Airbnb, we accidentally walked into the middle of St. Peter’s Square. We were all awe-struck by its beauty, but it was especially cool because none of us were expecting it.
