Buckeyes Abroad: Maggie Payne

“One of the main reasons I picked Ohio State was because I knew that, even with a specific major, I would have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester and still graduate on time. Going abroad felt like the perfect way to challenge myself academically and personally,” reflected Maggie Payne, a molecular genetics major who is currently abroad on the DIS - Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark program.

Payne is spending the semester living and taking classes in Copenhagen, including a core course called ‘European Clinical Psychology’ to complete her minor in clinical psychology.

“So far, I have learned that I adapt to new environments better than I expected. Living in Copenhagen brought many new challenges and changes to my everyday life, such as navigating public transportation, adjusting to limited daylight during the winter months and embracing more traditional Danish meals. While I was nervous at the start, I have adjusted well. I take every day with full stride, doing my best to take advantage of every opportunity,” said Payne.

Through this exciting new experience, Payne hopes to bring the lessons back to Columbus and to her future career aspirations as a genetic counselor.

“I believe that broadening cultural perspectives can help anyone move forward in any career. As a genetic counselor, I will need to be open and aware of cultural differences, have difficult conversations and prepare for uncertainty. My time in Copenhagen has already helped me grow in these areas by pushing me out of my comfort zone and encouraging me to think in a more global mindset,” she said.

While Payne notes that adjusting to the time difference while trying to stay in touch with friends and family has been hard, firsthand experiences with Danish culture are memories that she won’t soon forget.

“So far, some of my favorite moments in Copenhagen have included exploring the city by eating in cafes and bakeries, shopping and walking around with friends. I have also been living with a host family, which has been one of the most meaningful parts of my experience. Living with them has been the best opportunity for me to fully immerse myself in the Danish culture,” Payne reflected.
