“The classes I have taken besides counting towards my major have all contributed to engender a curiosity for more knowledge. It has reinforced my approach to learning where science and humanities are balanced. I also believe it will make me distinctive among my peers when I start applying to medical schools,” reflected Josh Danielson, a microbiology major on the pre-medicine track, who is currently studying abroad at the University of Galway in Ireland.
Danielson is taking classes related to his major, while also adding philosophy, history and literature courses.
“I had never left America prior to this experience, and it was important to me that I travel when I had the ability to. I chose Ireland because of its rich history and the ability to travel many other places in Europe,” Danielson said.
Both inside and outside the classroom, Danielson is expanding his horizons and gaining lessons he can use to better himself personally and professionally.
“I’ve learned that I really enjoy social life in towns such as Galway. I had not been one to go to parties and such, but here I found the experience a lot more welcoming and entertaining. I have also taken classes I normally would not have, all humanities courses, and I feel it has greatly expanded my cultural knowledge.”
Ireland’s unique position close to other major European countries allowed Danielson to travel beyond the island and gain even more amazing experiences.
“I have been able to travel all around Ireland and each area no matter the size is so stunning. Visiting Blarney Castle was particularly amazing to me. Furthermore, I have traveled out of Ireland to Münich, Germany for Oktoberfest which was very fun. Overall, however, the greatest moments have been sharing time with the friends I have made here.”
