Buckeyes Abroad: Erin Estocin

For Erin Estocin, a fourth-year strategic communication major at Ohio State, studying abroad on the AIFS Abroad in London program was an opportunity to see both the world — and herself — from a new perspective.

“My study abroad experience was memorable because it provided an academically enriching environment that broadened my understanding of the field of communications,” Estocin said. “Studying in a different educational system exposed me to new teaching styles and cultural experiences that deepened my perspective.”

The trip was a milestone for Estocin, who had never been out of the country before.

“It was important for me to go abroad because I had never traveled internationally,” she said. “I saw it as a chance to grow personally by building independence and learning how to navigate the world on my own.”

Her time in London challenged her to step outside her comfort zone and embrace self-reliance.

“My time in London pushed me to become a more independent version of myself,” she said. “Whether it was navigating city life, managing my time or meeting new friends, I gained a new level of confidence and adaptability.”

Adapting to life in a new country came with challenges, but Estocin said those moments were crucial to her growth.

“Being abroad meant adjusting to a new environment away from home,” she said. “Navigating cultural differences and learning to be flexible helped me become more resilient.”

The experience, she said, not only shaped her personally but also influenced her professional goals.

“Studying abroad in London showed me that I want to continue exploring the world,” Estocin said. “It strengthened my passion for global engagement and inspired me to pursue opportunities that allow me to live and work internationally. After graduation, I hope to take part in a post-graduate internship abroad because I believe gaining a global perspective in the workforce is just as valuable as a global education.”
