“The internship program is incredible at Sant’anna. It is a lot of work, but this work experience is so unique and irreplaceable. It is going to help me stand out on my resume, and as an accounting major I really need that,” reflected Paige Sakach, who is currently abroad on the Sant’Anna Institute Study Abroad and International Internship program in Sorrento, Italy.

Sakach is interning at the Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento, a five star and Michelin Key awardee, where she is evaluating foreign business practices and aiding in the development of tourist accommodation strategies.
“I have learned so many skills since being here, such as navigating a language barrier, hospitality in a luxury space and business models and management in a luxury hotel bar restaurant,” said Sakach.
Sakach was never initially inspired to go abroad until she got to Ohio State. However, once she explored the variety of options, she never looked back.
“Once the thought entered my mind, I never really shook it. I really felt like I needed a big change and a new challenge, and I thought that the experience Sant’Anna had to offer was one I truly would never get again,” she reflected.
In addition to her internship, Sakach is studying Italian and marine biology, getting to be immersed in the culture she is learning about while also observing marine life through activities such as snorkeling and kayaking.
“From being here, I have learned to be alone and really appreciate the time I have with myself. I have also learned that I have a lot more street knowledge than I thought I did and can navigate foreign places successfully,” noted Sakach. “I also have learned that I am capable of harder things than I ever thought. Being away from my family and friends is difficult, but it has been so worth it and so rewarding.”
For other Buckeyes looking for a similar experience as Sakach, her advice is to not be discouraged by being alone and take advantage of the circumstances and ease of study abroad in college.
“Everything is so different in every part of the world and to be able to see that firsthand is life changing,” she said. “You are only 18-22 in college with the experience to live in a different country and experience a different culture, and with Sant’anna, work, one time! The only thing consistent in life is change, so embrace it!”
