Buckeyes Abroad: Evelyn Maloney

From this experience, I learned that I love trying new things and meeting new people. Studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. It helped me become more independent, adaptable, and more open-minded than I realized. For example, I learned how to navigate public transportation in Paris, which was initially challenging, but ended up being an incredibly useful skill,” reflected senior accounting major Evelyn Maloney on the Global May Paris program.

Studying abroad in Paris was especially important for me because, as a French minor, I wanted to be able to use my French speaking skills and immerse myself in French culture. Being in an environment where I was surrounded by the French language everyday helped me to grow more confident in my speaking skills and helped me learn more about the culture as well."

Led by the Department of French and Italian, students explore the social, cultural and geographical history of the city of Paris from the Middle Ages to the present through the study of a number of key events and places in the city’s rich history.

“I was fully immersed in the French culture and language I have been studying for years, so being able to use my French knowledge made the experience incredibly meaningful. With the help of our amazing tour guides, I was able to learn so many interesting facts about French history. Additionally, I had the opportunity to make so many new friends with others in the program. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will always cherish!” said Maloney.

Students visit museums and monuments and take short trips to Versailles and Giverny to understand the city’s transformation to modern history.

“I have always wanted to work and live abroad in France, and this program gave me a valuable glimpse into what that experience could be like. Living in Paris for two weeks helped me to understand the challenges of the city, along with helping to build my confidence with navigating a new environment and communicating with a different culture. It showed me that I am capable of thriving in unfamiliar settings and reinforced my future goals of living abroad.”
