Gebreyes meets key partners in Ethiopia

Executive Director of Ohio State's Global One Health initiative, Wondwossen Gebreyes, recently visited the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia and met with U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Tracey Ann Jacobson, USAID Ethiopia Director Sean Jones, CDC Country Director for Ethiopia Caroline Ryan, and Cultural Attaché Doug Johnston to discuss strategic priorities and strengthen long-standing partnerships in the health and higher education sectors.

The delegation also included Ebba Abate, Desalegne Degefaw and Bethlehem Hailemariam from the GOHi Eastern Africa office.

Data collection on costing of VPD surveillance in Ethiopia

In collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) has been conducting a vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) surveillance costing study in Ethiopia.

This cross-sectional, retrospective, quantitative study was conducted at five administrative levels – federal, regional, zonal, woreda and health facilities – to collect primary and secondary data on resource utilization and costs from selected costing centers over one year.

Global One Health LLC helps conduct causality assessment of AEFI

The Ohio State Global One Health LLC supported the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) to undertake a causality assessment of adverse events following COVID-19 vaccines reported to the pharmacovigilance system. Experts from the national pharmacovigilance advisory committee, the EFDA pharmacovigilance team and 26 clinicians conducted the assessment.

Training on monitoring and evaluation

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) Eastern Africa office, in collaboration with Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), facilitated a three-day training from March 2-4 at Bishoftu, Ethiopia, targeting monitoring and evaluation (M&E) at EPHI and sub nationals working with the surveillance program. The training covered M&E basics, M&E frameworks, public health evaluations, stakeholder engagement, SMART indicators and data quality and use with a focus on designing and planning M&E systems to improve project outcomes and data-driven actions.

GOHi kicks off AMR project

The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) held a kick-off meeting for the new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded antimicrobial resistance (AMR) project on February 22, 2022, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. High-level leaders from the Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Zewditu Memorial Hospital and other stakeholders attended, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization and the CDC's Atlanta and Ethiopia offices.

Costing of the Ethiopia VPD Surveillance System

The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) hosted a kickoff meeting on February 16, 2022, to start a U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC)-funded project on the costing of the Ethiopia Vaccine-Preventable Disease (VPD) Surveillance System to strengthen Ethiopia’s core International Health Regulation capabilities. In partnership with the Ethiopian government and other in-country partners, this project aims to produce country-level estimates of the financial costs of the Ethiopian VPD Surveillance System.

Workshop to strengthen Ethiopia’s IHR capabilities

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is a two-year, multi-partner program funded by the U.S. CDC to strengthen Ethiopia's core International Health Regulation capabilities. Since March 2021, Ohio State Global One Health, LLC, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and other in-country partners have been exerting a tremendous effort towards strengthening the influenza surveillance system through laboratory capacity building and workforce development.
