“Studying abroad was important to me because I wanted to immerse myself in a different culture and challenge myself to be outside of my comfort zone. As a public health student, I’ve learned how history, culture and environment shape people's lives. Being immersed in another country has really broadened my worldview and allowed me to apply new perspectives to everyday life,” reflected Essence Dean, a public health student who participated in the Global May Paris program.
During this two-week program in France, students learn about the city's history, art, culture and development over time through site visits, museum tours and coursework.
“This experience has helped me develop adaptability, cultural awareness and communication skills that will be valuable in my career. Studying abroad has reinforced the importance of approaching people and situations, especially unfamiliar ones, with curiosity, kindness and an open mind,” said Dean.
The group visits iconic Parisian sites, getting a unique look into the culture of one of the largest cities in the world. For Dean, however, her favorite moments came from simply being a part of the environment of the city and experiencing the independence of being abroad.
“My most memorable moments came from experiencing everyday life in the city. Simple moments, like walking through the neighborhoods, grocery shopping or even just sitting in cafes left a lasting memory from this experience.”
Through the Global May Paris program, Dean gleaned the self-development and career skills that she will not only use when she’s back in Columbus, but in her future career in public health.
“One of the biggest things I have learned is that I can adapt and navigate the unexpected. This experience has strengthened my confidence and taught me to trust myself when navigating unfamiliar situations. I have become more independent and learned that real personal growth can come from both challenges and success,” shared Dean.
