Student Spotlight: Adrija Bhattacharya

Originally from India, Adrija Bhattacharya found opportunities to grow as both a leader and mentor, build meaningful connections and create inclusive experiences at Ohio State.

"As an international student from across the globe, living thousands of miles away from home, the transition to studying in the United States was definitely challenging at first. Coming to the U.S. was not only about expanding my horizons and pursuing my passion for environmental engineering, but also about growing socially and personally - and Ohio State provided the perfect balance for that," shares Adrija Bhattacharya, a second-year majoring in environmental engineering.

Originally from Kolkata, India, Bhattacharya was born and raised in Doha, Qatar.

Getting connected with opportunities across campus is a successful approach for most Buckeyes and one that Bhattacharya took advantage of both personally and professionally. "I found opportunities to grow as both a leader and mentor, build meaningful connections and create inclusive experiences," Bhattacharya notes. "I have served as the Vice President of the Community Council, Director of Programming for the Residence Hall Advisory Committee, a UTA for Fundamentals of Engineering 1181 & 1182, and as a member of the Volunteering Committee of Hindu Yuva."

The support system at the university is vast Bhattacharya explains. "Ohio State offers a wide range of resources that support all students of all ethnic backgrounds. From academic advising, tutoring services, and engineering support programs to career fairs, and cultural organizations, there is something for everyone."

Bhattacharya offers tips for success at Ohio State. "My advice to prospective students interested in a similar career path is to stay curious and open to new experiences. Take advantage of the opportunities around you, whether it’s getting involved in student organizations, seeking mentorship, or exploring internships, setting up coffee chats with professors or a random person from your class. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because that’s where the most growth happens."
