Buckeyes Abroad: Daniela Coutinho

“Going abroad allowed me to grow both personally and professionally by challenging my assumptions and encouraging a more open mindset. I gained a deeper appreciation for the diversity within Latin America and learned how much climate, history and community values shape agricultural practices,” reflected Daniela Coutinho, an animal science major who participated in the Panama: AgriCulture and Sustainability program over winter break.

Students on this program explore Panama’s unique agricultural systems, sustainability efforts and cultural history through visits to farms, historic sites and the country’s diverse microclimates.

“This experience strengthened my understanding of global agriculture and the environmental factors that influence animal production systems. It also helped me become a more culturally competent communicator, especially when engaging with future Spanish-speaking clients. These skills will support me as I work toward becoming a veterinarian who can serve all communities with empathy and clarity,” said Coutinho.

Another impactful piece of the program was a visit to the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca indigenous community, where students learned about their traditions, agricultural practices and ways of life. Talking to these people and other local populations made the experience particularly memorable for Coutinho.

“My favorite moments were the conversations I had with lifelong farmers and local technicians who shared their pride in their work and their communities. Visiting the indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca and learning about their traditions and daily life was especially meaningful. I also loved connecting with my peers as we explored farms, met distinct native Creole cattle breeds and experienced Panama’s culture together.”

Through these life-changing experiences, Coutinho will return to Columbus with a deeper cultural appreciation and soft skills she can use throughout her academic and post-graduate career.

“I learned that I can approach unfamiliar situations with confidence and trust myself to adapt. This program helped me stay open minded, patient and willing to let new experiences unfold without comparison to past challenges. It also deepened my appreciation for Latin American cultures and reminded me how meaningful it is to connect with people through respect and curiosity,” she said.
