“This program made me realize that living and working abroad is a real possibility for me. Before going to Brazil I assumed I would always live and work in the United States, but the experience broadened my perspective,” reflected Lee Rwema, a finance major who studied abroad during winter break on the Fisher College of Business Honors Cohort Global Lab program in Brazil.
Students on this program analyze the current business environment of Brazil by examining its cultural, political, economic, health and geographic characteristics, focusing on the interdependence between these factors and analyzing what implications they have for both business opportunities and management practices.
“It was important for me to go abroad to gain exposure to business norms in Brazil, especially since the asset management field operates within a global market,” said Rwema. “I also appreciated that the trip was made affordable by the generosity of cohort and Fisher alumni, ensuring that no one’s participation was limited by financial constraints.”
The group stayed in São Paulo for the first five days where they visited and connected with companies such as Factset, the Ohio State Brazil Gateway and Litro de Luz. The rest of the program is spent in Rio de Janeiro immersed in Brazilian culture by savoring traditional foods, visiting landmarks like Christ the Redeemer, and enjoying the iconic Copacabana beach.
“This early exposure to global business standards will be super helpful as I pursue a career in asset management. It’ll be awesome to understand how companies operate in different cultural contexts. That way, I can better evaluate international markets and make more thoughtful investment decisions,” said Rwema. “Plus, it’ll give me the confidence to chat with global clients and partners, knowing that I’ve got firsthand experience navigating cross-border business practices.”
For Rwema, some of his favorite moments surrounded celebrating his 22nd birthday abroad.
“We visited Sinal do Vale in Rio, an inspiring Brazilian center for ecological and community regeneration, which was truly special. After learning about the incredible work of founder Thais Corral and her team, we had a meal that I'd say is a top-5 meal I've ever had because not only how good the food was but also for how clean and energizing it felt. To my surprise, the staff brought out several cakes and sang me happy birthday, adding a warm and memorable ending to an already impactful day.”
