Sophia Jeong, assistant professor, Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Education and Human Ecology, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to develop “Research Collaboration to Enhance K-12 Science Teachers’ Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with AI-Powered Educational Technology” in Türkiye. During spring 2025, Jeong will build upon an existing international research collaboration between The Ohio State University and Boğaziçi University to enhance K-12 science teachers’ ability to implement culturally relevant pedagogy through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered educational technology.
Jeong’s Fulbright project aims to revolutionize science education by integrating cutting-edge AI technology with culturally responsive teaching practices.
“My research objectives focus on leveraging students’ diverse cultural backgrounds to inform science instruction and enhance the development of science teachers’ cultural competence. The project seeks to develop a professional learning community to foster collaboration and develop best practices for incorporating AI-powered educational technology into science classrooms. Through qualitative and quantitative research methods, the project will assess the impact of AI technology on K-12 science teachers’ ability to enact culturally relevant pedagogy,” Jeong shares.
“Rooted in a commitment to diversity and inclusivity, this project aims to create spaces within science education that support diverse ways of knowing and understanding science. By combining AI technology with culturally relevant teaching practices, the project advocates for a more enriching, inclusive, and diverse landscape of science education. The research findings will contribute to ongoing efforts to broaden participation in STEM education through inclusive and culturally relevant curriculum,” Jeong explains.
