Pursuing the intersection of creativity and technology is one of the things that drew Leyi Wang, an international student from Nanjing, China, to Ohio State and to her major in experimental media design within the Department of Design.
Students in the program learn how to design immersive experiences across platforms like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and interactive installations. Wang notes she has always been interested in digital media, especially game design and interactive experiences, and the major allows her to not only design visually but also think about user interaction and storytelling.
“What I enjoy most is the freedom to experiment. The program encourages us to explore different tools, ideas, and forms of expression, which makes every project feel unique and meaningful,” said Wang.
Along with taking advantage of top-of-the-line facilities available on campus, Wang notes that collaboration between different colleges and working with talented faculty are other aspects of Ohio State that she appreciates.
“I’ve had many chances to communicate directly with professors, which really helps with both my academic and creative growth. In addition, there are a wide variety of elective courses, so I’m able to explore different interests beyond my major, which makes my learning experience more flexible and personalized.”
Some of Wang’s favorite experiences in her major are the semesterly projects that involve design, storytelling as well as technical skills like 3D modeling, animation and interactive media. Additionally, she has taken advantage of artist exhibitions and guest lectures that are hosted by the department and is involved on campus.
“Outside of academics, I’ve been actively involved in campus organizations such as CSSS (Chinese Students and Scholars Society). Through these activities, I’ve had the chance to connect with other students, participate in events and develop teamwork and communication skills,” she said.
Going forward, Wang wishes to continue her studies in graduate school, focusing on game design or interactive media to eventually land a job in a field where she can continue exploring creative ideas while using new technologies.
