“Studying abroad while I am young is very important to me because it allows me to see the world and immerse myself in different cultures. I hope to create meaningful, lifelong memories while challenging myself beyond my comfort zone. Through this experience, I cannot only explore new places but also develop valuable personal and academic skills,” reflected Addi Obermeyer, a speech and hearing science major who is currently studying abroad on the ISI Perugia - The Umbra Institute program.
Obermeyer is spending the semester in Perugia, a historic town in central Italy known for its college population, art scene, architecture and historical significance.
“This experience will support my future career as a speech-language pathologist by strengthening my cultural competence, patience and communication flexibility. Living abroad has taught me to adapt my language, listen more carefully and empathize with people navigating unfamiliar situations, skills essential for supporting patients with communication disorders,” said Obermeyer.
During her classroom studies, Obermeyer will learn Italian language and culture while pursuing electives in a variety of disciplines taught in English. She will also have the opportunity to participate in academic field study to famous Italian cities and sites.
“I’ve learned that I am capable of more than I thought. Being abroad has made me more independent, open-minded and confident in unfamiliar situations,” she said.
“My best memories so far have been meeting new friends, including people I had never met at Ohio State and others from across the country. I especially loved traveling to Rome with my roommate and seeing the Vatican and the Colosseum, as well as visiting Florence, where we enjoyed shopping. We have also visited smaller cities such as Siena and Assisi, which were incredibly beautiful. Everywhere in Italy has been stunning, and I am incredibly grateful for this experience and the memories I have made so far.”
