When sophomore women’s golfer Mandy Song decided to take her academic and athletic talents from Beijing, China to Columbus, Ohio, she knew that she would be joining a large community with plenty of resources to help her on and off the course.

“I chose Ohio State because it has both strong academics and a highly competitive athletic program. As part of such a large university community, I have many opportunities to grow as a student and an athlete,” she noted.
In addition to her success on the golf course in her first year, where she competed in 11 events and finished the season with a 76.53 stroke average, she also earned the OSU Scholar Athlete honor, deciding to pursue a degree in sport industry in the College of Education and Human Ecology.
“I love the energy here! The support from friends, professors and coaches makes Ohio State feel like a second home.”
On campus, Song likes to spend her time at favorite spots like Mirror Lake on a sunny day or the RPAC. In the classroom, she notices some differences between learning in China and America.
“Classes here are more open and interactive, they encourage more discussion and group work,” said Song, who also offers advice to fellow international students to succeed at Ohio State. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or reach out for help. Also, getting involved in campus activities is also a great way to make friends and feel connected.”
As an international student and an athlete, Song faces a unique set of circumstances but feels like being at Ohio State will set her on the best path for her collegiate and professional career.
“Ohio State gives me amazing coaches, facilities and competition to keep improving in golf. Playing golf here prepares me for my future professional golf career while also helping me grow off the course,” Song reflected.
Song and the rest of the Buckeyes women’s golf team will be back on the course on October 19 in San Marcos, Texas for the Jim West Challenge.
