Jacob Boswell, associate professor, Landscape ArchitectureKnowlton SchoolCollege of Engineering, has been awarded a 2025-2026 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for “Community-based utilization of distributed energy resources in Scotland: a built environment inventory.” As the 2025-2026 Scotland Distinguished Scholar at the University of Edinburgh, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences by the US-UK Fulbright Commission, Boswell will be based in Edinburgh from January – July, 2026.

“While in Scotland I will be visiting and documenting a wide variety of community-based distributed energy resource (DER) projects. I hope to document a cross section of these energy projects to better understand the forms they have taken and decision making around their design,” Boswell said.

“Currently, we know very little about the physical form these projects take, or how that form can be understood in relation to their specific social and environmental context. I’m hoping to produce a series of case studies on exemplary models that can situate the functional and economic aspects of each project. My end goal is to create a book of these case studies with the hope that they can be a resource and inspiration to other communities and for the designers and engineers who are thinking about and working with those future communities,” Boswell explained.

While in Edinburgh Boswell will be headquartered within the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) and will also be working with the Edinburgh Earth Initiative. He will also be working closely with colleagues and students at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA).
