Alexis Villacis, assistant professor, Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has been awarded a 2025-2026 Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to research “The Economics of Cacao Production in Ecuador.” From June 16 – July 4, Villacis will be based at the Universidad de Especialidades Espiritu Santo in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Ecuador, renowned globally as one of the leading producers of cacao, faces a significant gap in its academic and research capabilities within the field of agribusiness, particularly in the economics of cacao production. Despite the country's pivotal role in the global cacao market, higher education institutions lack faculty members who specialize their work in this crucial research area.
“This Fulbright project will address the establishment of a robust research agenda focused on the business aspects of cacao value chains, and therefore, building a comprehensive understanding of the economics surrounding cacao production. I will advise Universidad de Especialidades Espiritu Santo on how to build a research agenda based on the needs of the local cacao industry, so they can develop innovative solutions that enhance productivity, sustainability, and profitability for local cacao farmers,” said Villacis.
Villacis is hoping to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world applications.
“By supporting the local academic and research capabilities, I want to help Ecuador remain at the forefront of the global cacao market, fostering economic development and improving the livelihoods of those involved in the cacao value chain. I’m passionate about the social-welfare implications of cacao and chocolate production. As a Fulbright Specialist I want to not only benefit the local institution and their students, but also have a lasting positive impact on the broader community and the national economy,” remarked Villacis.
