Golrokh Mirzaei, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been awarded a 2025-2026 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Austria to research “Predictive Modeling of Glioblastoma Using Machine Learning and Imaging-Genomic Associations.”
From February – July 2026 Mirzaei will be at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria. Her Fulbright project will focus on developing advanced machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for glioblastoma by integrating MRI imaging data with genomic profiles. The project also aims to uncover associations between imaging features and key driver gene mutations such as IDH1, TP53, EGFR, and others.
“My Fulbright research project seeks to advance non-invasive methods for predicting tumor behavior, guiding treatment decisions and improving outcomes for glioblastoma patients. Additionally, I will deliver lectures to medical and PhD students on the topic of "Machine Learning and Computational Models in Radiological Imaging," promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between AI and medical imaging,” Mirzaei explained. “This award will allow me to expand my research beyond departmental boundaries—across institutions and across countries.”
Mirzaei’s interdisciplinary research brings together machine learning, medical imaging and genomics. She currently collaborates with the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Neurology, and Molecular Genetics at Ohio State. This Fulbright opportunity supports the development of international research collaborations to advance precision medicine in glioblastoma care.
“Through the Fulbright experience, I aim to advance my research in neuroimaging and genomics by developing integrative computational models for the diagnosis and treatment planning of glioblastoma, while establishing long-term international collaborations that can lead to larger, multi-center research initiatives. My goal is to develop predictive models that enhance the non-invasive characterization of brain tumors and contribute to the advancement of personalized treatment strategies. Additionally, by teaching and engaging with students abroad, I aim to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and bring global research perspectives back to my home institution, enriching both our research and educational programs.
