Zac Shultz, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a 2025-2026 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Chile to research “Raman Spectroscopy and Microscopy of In Situ Copper Electrocatalysts.”
From September – December 2025, Schultz will research the reaction chemistry that occurs on copper catalysts relevant to important chemical reactions for producing ammonia and other necessary compounds. He will work alongside Professor Mauricio Isaacs, a colleague at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC).
Schultz will provide expertise in Raman spectroscopy and microscopy, through research collaboration and teaching, to facilitate ongoing research in electro-catalysis at the PUC and other universities in Santiago. Combining these measurement skills with ongoing efforts in copper electro-catalysis will generate new avenues to advance understanding of these materials.
“I hope to foster stronger ties to research collaborators in Chile and develop new avenues for research at Ohio State. By spending time at PUC, I hope to gain insight into the chemical systems they are studying and share my expertise to enable new research opportunities for our teams. I have hosted several Chilean students in my laboratory at Ohio State and hope this experience provides me a stronger appreciation of the Chilean culture to enhance future collaborations,” said Schultz.
