Sendoff luncheon for new Brazilian students

In addition to hosting and co-hosting Pre-departure Orientation events in June, the Brazil Gateway joined the Alumni Club of Brazil and international students and scholars on June 24 to host the second sendoff lunch for new Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students as well as visiting scholars.

Fabio Leite, associate professor in experimental/cognitive psychology and academic director of the Brazil Gateway, attended the event, as well as Jaret Waters, BA, and Gustavo Ribeiro, MBA, both Fisher College of Business alumni. They shared their Ohio State experiences with the group.

Faculty Spotlight: Isis Barra Costa

The Graduate School awarded Isis Barra Costa, professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the 2023 Graduate Faculty Mentor Award (GFMA). This award recognizes her exceptional mentorship to graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences. On April 26, Barra Costa attended the Graduate School’s annual award ceremony at the Ohio Union and was honored by Dean Mary Stromberger.

International Fellowship Program builds capacity

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) International Fellowship Program aims to equip Indian biomedical scientists with advanced training and exposure to cutting-edge knowledge and technology with international experts in their fields. The Ohio State University College of Medicine is one of seven U.S. institutions that will consider fellowship applicants. 

Alumni Spotlight: Anu Shultes

Anu Shultes ’03 MBA balanced the demands of motherhood and her academic studies, all while making the 120-mile commute from Cincinnati to Columbus to complete her degree at Ohio State.  

​Her first day of orientation at Ohio State ​​​coincided ​​with the 9/11 tragedy, bringing​ her entire class closer, and also ​shaping Shultes' profound connection to ​her adopted​ country.

Ohio State and IIT Bombay expand partnership

Ohio State and IIT Bombay are working on a Cotutelle PhD program with the candidate being enrolled in both IIT Bombay and Ohio State with academic supervisory from both institutions to address global scientific challenges spanning materials, data analytics and quantum information technologies. This partnership amplifies Ohio State and IIT Bombay's potential, enhancing interdisciplinary faculty research in energy storage, additive manufacturing and photovoltaics.  

Send-off events build foundation for new students

The India Gateway and the Alumni Club of South India made sure the newest Buckeyes from India would be well prepared for the first day of classes at The Ohio State University by hosting send-off events in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Close to 50 students and their families participated in the gatherings, which fostered connections and provided insight from alumni and current students about university life, the campus environment, food options and a myriad of opportunities.   

Brazil Gateway team engages partners and potential students

This summer, the Brazil Gateway attended conferences and events throughout Brazil to build connections with current and potential partners as well as interested students.

FAUBAI

The Brazil Gateway team attended the Brazilian Association for International Education’s (FAUBAI) conference April 17-20, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. This year’s theme was “Building Knowledge with all Voices” and brought panels, roundtables and sessions that showcased the urgency of diversity and inclusion in international education opportunities and leadership.

Chavan selected as a 2023 alumni award honoree

Madhav Chavan '83 PhD, a distinguished chemist turned educator, is this year's recipient of the Robert M. Duncan Alumni Citizenship Award. Chavan has been recognized by The Ohio State University Alumni Association for his exceptional contributions to education and transforming the lives of underprivileged children in his native India.

Şahin appointed new VP for global strategies

The Ohio State University has selected Kaya Şahin, PhD, as its next vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, effective Nov. 1. Şahin currently serves as executive associate dean of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University (IU).
