Two Ohio State students were awarded Boren Scholarships to study critical languages. Piper Harrell, international studies and Japanese double major, will study Japanese at the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan, for the 2023-24 academic year. Wen Holmes, criminology and Chinese double major and international studies minor, will study Mandarin at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, for the 2023-24 academic year.
An initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, the Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate or graduate students. Boren Scholars and Fellows study a wide range of critical languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili. Boren Awards are available to students of all proficiency levels who are committed to enhancing their skills and pursuing a career in national security. Recipients immerse themselves in the cultures in world regions underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
