International alumni reunion facilitated by China Gateway

People holding an Ohio State pennant

With a living alumni network of more than 640,000, Buckeyes can be found in 175 countries across the world. Sometimes, there are even Ohio State alumni in places closer than one might expect.

The China Gateway recently connected four alumni who currently work at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and previously never met.

Ke Chen ’09 PhD, materials science and engineering, Liang Yuan ’11 PhD, electrical and computer engineering, Ying Zu ’13 PhD, astronomy and Yonger Xue ’23 PhD, pharmacy, are all professors at SJTU in their respective subject areas and united for the first time over lunch with gateway director Phoebe You ‘09 to connect about their respective eras at Ohio State.

The group reminisced about football games and other events on campus, their favorite restaurants, scenes from around campus and above all, the support of the Chinese student community at Ohio State.

“No matter when we graduated or where our careers have taken us, being Buckeyes gives us an instant connection. Our time at Ohio State continues to bring us together through a global community,” said Xue, an associate professor in the School of Pharmacy at SJTU.

This reunion reflects the ongoing mission of the China Gateway to continue the connection between the university and China both for prospective students and alumni.
