The Ohio State University is one of 40 U.S. colleges and universities selected to receive an American Passport Project grant from the Institute of International Education (IIE). Funding will be dispersed to up to 25 Pell-eligible Buckeyes who aspire to study abroad. The $4,125 grant will cover the cost of obtaining a U.S. passport, an essential first step in the process.
Now in its sixth year, IIE’s American Passport Project has reached approximately 6,000 total students, increasing access to international education and lowering cost barriers. In 2026, IIE awarded $165,000 across institutions to fund opportunities for 1,000 students.
“This grant will support International Affairs’ mission to deliver impactful international experiences to students, while simultaneously increasing access to our programs,” said Kaya Şahin, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs.
During 2024-25, the Office of International Affairs facilitated more than 200 programs and 2,400 students studying abroad to 83 countries. International Affairs also awarded over $185,000 in scholarships last year.
“Studying abroad at Ohio State means an unparalleled learning experience with both career and personal development, something that we want to be available to all Buckeyes” added Jeannie Simmons, director of global education.
According to the IIE Open Doors Report, although study abroad numbers among American college students continues to increase, cost persists as a primary concern of prospective applicants, something that the grant hopes to combat.
IIE is a leader in designing and implementing international education strategies and program services. IIE works with governments, policymakers, educators and employers across the globe to prepare students and professionals for the global workforce and equip them to solve the increasingly complex challenges facing our interconnected world. The American Passport Project aims to grant 10,000 U.S. students their passports by 2030.
