Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

The Ohio State University is ranked 27th among doctoral institutions for the number of students studying abroad and 30th in international student enrollment, according to a national report released today.

Ohio State had 1,841 students studying abroad during the 2023-24 academic year and enrolled 7,409* international students from more than 100 countries. The university also is ranked 17th in the nation for the number of students participating in short-term programs with 1,628 studying abroad for two to eight weeks during the academic year.

These findings were issued as part of the 2025 Open Doors Report, an annual survey published by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The most popular destinations for Ohio State students studying abroad align with the national data and include programs in the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy. The top three countries of origin for international students at Ohio State include China with 4,031 students, India with 981 students and South Korea with 387 students, while nationally there are more students from India, followed by China and South Korea.

The 2025 Open Doors Report is released as part of the nationwide observance of International Education Week (November 17-21), historically a joint initiative established by the U.S. Departments of Education and State.

At Ohio State, International Education Week is celebrated through a number of activities supported by the Office of International Affairs, which facilitates Ohio State’s international initiatives and advances global opportunities for students, faculty and staff. *The IIE’s collection of enrollment data for international students includes two categories of students who are not currently enrolled at Ohio State in classes for credit. They include “Optional Practical Training” students who are not taking classes but are continuing their education through practical training in their field of study, and exchange students who are pursuing continuing (non-degree) education. For the 2024 academic year, Ohio State enrolled 6,096 international students and 1,313 students were exchange students or on Optional Practical Training.
