What made your agriculture and sustainability experience memorable?
My experience with agriculture and sustainability in Panama was unforgettable because it allowed me to witness firsthand how resourcefulness and innovation influence farming practices in a tropical environment. I observed hillside farms equipped with intricate irrigation systems and learned about organic crop cultivation methods, which deepened my appreciation for the hard work and creativity involved in sustaining agriculture in such diverse landscapes. Additionally, the contrasting perspectives on sustainability, such as the organic farmer's rejection of antibiotics for cattle, challenged my understanding and enriched my knowledge of global agricultural practices.
Why was it important for you to go to Panama?
Traveling to Panama was a significant experience for me because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to immerse myself in a completely different culture. This journey broadened my worldview, enhanced my understanding of global challenges in agriculture, and introduced me to innovative approaches to sustainability. By visiting Indigenous communities, farms, and the iconic Panama Canal, I gained valuable insights into the interconnectedness of culture, history, and the environment—insights that would have been difficult to fully grasp from a distance.
What have learned about yourself from this experience?
This experience taught me that I am more adaptable and resourceful than I had previously believed. I learned to rely on observation, body language, and patience to navigate situations where communication was challenging. It also highlighted the importance of embracing discomfort and uncertainty as opportunities for growth. Furthermore, I discovered how much I value different perspectives and how they can shape my understanding of the world and my approach to challenges.
How will you apply something you have learned from your time in Panama?
I plan to apply the lessons I learned in Panama by approaching future academic and professional challenges with an open mind and a willingness to adapt. This experience reinforced the importance of sustainability, and I hope to incorporate environmentally conscious practices into both my personal and professional life. Additionally, my time in Panama has inspired me to seek out diverse perspectives and collaborate with others to find innovative solutions to shared challenges.
Why is it important to be a global citizen?
Being a global citizen is important because it promotes empathy, understanding, and collaboration among different cultures. In our increasingly interconnected world, tackling global challenges such as climate change, food security, and resource management requires us to acknowledge our shared responsibilities and learn from one another. Embracing the role of a global citizen allows us to build bridges, discover common ground, and strive toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
