Fifteen Ohio State faculty and instructors have been selected to participate in the 2024 Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) community where they will design and integrate virtual global and intercultural learning experiences into general education and disciplinary curricula.
COIL connects Ohio State’s faculty and students with diverse peers in international higher education institutions where they can engage in intercultural dialogue and meaningful collaboration. COIL projects involve team-taught courses between faculty at two different institutions, class-to-class interactions among students on a selected topic, and shared collaborative projects between international student groups. The COIL experience is designed with the goal of developing intercultural competence in students and building faculty networks internationally.
This is the fourth COIL virtual exchange learning community coordinated through a partnership between the Office of International Affairs and the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning. The cohort will meet regularly throughout autumn semester and explore how to design intercultural collaborative learning with international partners, develop intercultural learning outcomes, find resources for online learning and identify valid methods to measure outcomes. There also will be opportunities for the cohort to meet and connect with COIL instructors from Mexico, Chile and Brazil to gain knowledge about their experiences.
The learning community is facilitated by Cindy Xinquan Jiang, senior research associate, and Danielle Schoon, COIL fellow, with the Office of International Affairs as well as Amy Lea Clemons, instructional design specialist with the Drake Institute.
