Suélen Pereira, a Brazilian attorney, is the first recipient of a scholarship awarded by the Alumni Club of Brazil. Pereira’s scholarship supported her enrollment in the Ohio State Moritz College of Law’s summer program, "The Foundations of U.S. Law & Practice."
"The course provided a profound and transformative learning experience that significantly impacted my personal, professional and academic life," Pereira said.
During the three-week program, participants learn about the foundation of U.S. legal systems, legal research and writing, and English for lawyers. The program also focuses on key legal concepts in dispute resolution, business law and corporate law and practical skills such as issue spotting, negotiation, client advice, legal document drafting and dispute resolution skills.
"This experience broadened my theoretical knowledge and equipped me with practical skills essential for my career. The hands-on exposure to real cases and the analysis of specific legislation honed my critical and strategic thinking, which is indispensable for meeting the challenges of legal practice," Pereira explained.
The Moritz summer program also welcomed 24 other Brazilian law students as part of its partnership with Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo.
"The knowledge I gained will serve as a cornerstone in my future endeavors. I am sincerely grateful for the scholarship and the opportunity to participate in this program, which will undoubtedly set me apart in my professional and academic journey," Pereira said.
The scholarship became possible as the result of a fundraising campaign the Alumni Club of Brazil launched in February 2024. The goal was to cover fees and program costs for people in Brazil with an interest in attending Ohio State or participating in an Ohio State program.
