Lauren Jesch at the Sahara Desert

Program: Global May Morocco
Location: Morocco
Rank: Junior
Major: Political Science; Nonprofit Management and Middle East Studies minors

"I chose Global May Morocco because I wanted to experience a culture completely outside of what I am familiar with. After deciding that I wanted to do a Global May trip, I weighed the pros and cons of each country that is available. The itinerary for the Morocco study abroad jumped out at me immediately. I knew that I probably would never get the opportunity again to ride camels in the Sahara Desert or visit the Royal Parliament, which made picking the program I wanted to apply for an easy decision.

Studying abroad is incredibly beneficial to not only my college experience, but my life as a whole. You can only learn so much about other cultures, religions and places in a class or a textbook. Being completely immersed in another way of life is, in my opinion, the best way to discover another country. Of course study Lauren Jesch and fellow Buckeyes abroad in Moroccoabroad programs look good on a resume, but I took away a lot from my time spent in Morocco. These types of experiences will change you as a person and help you not only learn about other people, but learn about yourself.

My favorite memory from my study abroad was getting to experience living with a host family. I was incredibly nervous about what to expect, but within just a few hours of meeting and getting situated with my parents and siblings I instantly felt comfortable. My host family really went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of and felt safe. I don’t think I would have gotten the full experience had I not lived with them because it really makes you feel like you are part of the Moroccan culture."
