Collaborative Online International Learning

Virtual Intercultural Experiences

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) offers virtual learning experiences that connect students with their peers at home and around the world. These virtual programs provide students with opportunities to develop intercultural competence through international collaboration.

COIL involves an online partnership between two higher education institutions in different countries. The online learning experience is embedded in academic courses, co-developed and co-taught by two instructors based at different institutions and across disciplines, and is built around a collaborative project that works toward achieving equitable participation by all enrolled students from both countries. Students in these classes engage in a joint project over a sustained five- to 10-week period.

COIL gives students access to intercultural interactions and learning in an equitable and accessible way, ensuring they are prepared to succeed in the global marketplace as internationally informed and engaged citizens.

“COIL has enriched my intercultural understanding by fostering meaningful connections with peers from diverse backgrounds. It has provided a global perspective, helping me navigate cross-cultural communication and broaden my worldview.”
