The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) provided on-site hand hygiene and environmental cleaning training to healthcare workers from Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Zewditu Memorial Hospital through an antimicrobial resistance project funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in October 2022.
Effective hand hygiene practices and environmental cleaning within health facilities are the two major infection prevention and control (IPC) components for effectively controlling hospital-associated infections. As a part of IPC implementation in these two hospitals, GOHi hosted a half-day hand hygiene and environmental cleaning training for 123 healthcare workers.
The training consisted of a presentation, practical demonstration and competency assessment where all trainees illustrated the knowledge and skill they gained from the training. The project's overall goal is to reduce the transmission and spread of hospital-acquired infections with a particular focus on carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant enterobactrales by enhancing laboratory detection and implementing appropriate IPC activities.
