India Gateway and Foundation for Neglected Disease Research co-hosted international conference in Bangalore

The Foundation for Neglected Disease Research (FNDR) in Bangalore and the India Gateway hosted a one-day signature conference to confront the challenges of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. The “International Conference on Recent Advancements on TB and HIV Research” brought together faculty, clinicians, regulators, entrepreneurs and practitioners to share scientific information in Bangalore, India, site of premiere research facilities, academic institutions and hospitals, on January 11, 2023.

Ohio State College of Medicine professor Shu Hua Wang, Director, Global One Health initiative Implementation Science and Research, and Ohio State alumnus Shridhar Narayanan, PhD ‘96, pharmacology, Founder and CEO, FNDR, spearheaded the conference planning alongside Vishwajeet Phopale, business development specialist, India Gateway.

Ohio State faculty Namal Liyanage, Murugesan Rajaram, Purnima Dubey and Natarajan Muthusamy, traveled to India to participate in the conference proceedings.

Padmapriyadarsini C, director, ICMR-National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, shared the latest data on the TB situation in India and the government of India’s strategy and commitment to combat the disease during his opening remarks. In the following four sessions experts echoed the necessity of further clinical research, diagnostic development, basic research and drug discovery and development towards combating tuberculosis and HIV across the globe. 

Given the disruption caused by TB and HIV in India, the timely agenda featured faculty, researchers, clinical experts, as well as practicing healthcare professionals, who shared scientific information and cutting-edge research and urged to join forces to collaborate with the South Asian community to combat these diseases.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to foster cross-border collaborations with researchers and faculty members representing eminent research organizations such as National TB Institute, National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Indian Institute of Science, CSIR – Institute Of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Indian Council of Medical Research - Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre, and St. John’s Medical College. Senior leadership from Serum Institute of India, Zydus Life, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Lupin SAVA Healthcare, Peptris Technologies, Samrud Foundation for Health and Research, also attended.

This fourth edition of the International Infectious Disease conference builds upon the three prior conferences in 2018, 2019 and 2021. This was the first in-person conference since the pandemic emerged in 2020.
