As part of the effort to build the capacity for detecting Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs) in Ethiopia, the Global One Health initiative (GOHi), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), has been actively engaged in the provision of Training of Trainers (TOT) for healthcare workers at the facility level.
GOHi helped deliver two rounds of three-day TOT training on clinical specimen collection for 47 participants from antimicrobial resistance (AMR) project participating facilities – including the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Zewditu Memorial Hospital – and from other health facilities from EPHI AMR surveillance sites. The training aimed to build healthcare workers' capacity on appropriate specimen collection techniques and practices to reduce and combat AMR.
As part of TOT, the participants will lead training annually for selected clinicians and laboratory professionals at their respective health facilities and public health laboratories in the country. These classes will improve the quality of results from microbiology labs of these facilities, augmenting the efforts placed for early detection of MDR pathogens of epidemiologic importance at a national level.
