Over the past two years the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) has been implementing the CARES project with the aim to strengthen the national public health surveillance, laboratory systems and to build human capital development in Ethiopia.
GOHi already has established four additional molecular laboratories in four regions in Ethiopia, deployed more than 65 surveillance experts all over the country to enhance the disease surveillance capacity and response as well as becoming highly involved in human capital development.
As part of the project implementation, a review was conducted May 2-19 by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The purpose of the evaluation was to assess the progress made so far in achieving the project’s objectives and goals (surveillance system strengthening, establishment of molecular laboratory detection centers, health workforce capacity development and others). The review process included: discussion with key informants; document review; and working visits to selected field sites. The Ministry of Health team reviewed the performance of the CARES project implementation in four regions: Oromia, SNNP, Sidama and Amhara as well as activities taking place in Addis Ababa.
Overall, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, three regional public health institutes, three regional laboratories and five hospitals were visited during the review period. The review team has been accompanied by GOHi Ethiopia team members. The project implementation and the outcomes generated so far have been greatly appreciated. The final report will be shared by the MOH team in a couple of weeks.
