This summer, the Brazil Gateway attended conferences and events throughout Brazil to build connections with current and potential partners as well as interested students.

FAUBAI

The Brazil Gateway team attended the Brazilian Association for International Education’s (FAUBAI) conference April 17-20, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. This year’s theme was “Building Knowledge with all Voices” and brought panels, roundtables and sessions that showcased the urgency of diversity and inclusion in international education opportunities and leadership.

In addition to networking with peers, the team presented a session on the experience with the nonprofit Meli Bees, which works with indigenous, quilombola and smallholder communities in the Amazon regions of Para and Maranhao. The presentation titled “The Ohio State University and Meli Bees nonprofit – Listening to and speak with Amazon voices” highlighted the joint event, Amazon Journey, hosted in September 2022 that gathered voices from community members, Ohio State and Brazilian faculty and students to discuss various issues in entomology, geography and anthropology pertaining to the area previously known as the arc of deforestation.
